The NIWRA runs a fascinating recovery centre located in Errington. Here is a map of how to get there from Nanaiomo (and essentially from Victoria, once you have gotten to Nanaimo)
My boys and I have visited this centre, regularly since moving here. It is well set up for self guided tours. There is a peek hole in to an eagle flight room, where rehabilitated birds are stretching their wings before being released. As well, they have a resident black bear and several other un-releasable critters. The signage does a great job of explaining how the animals came to live in this place.
You can also request a tour guide for a group. We have done this and though the information was well presented, I think the tour is just as rewarding done solo. There is a hands on room amongst the exhibits, where folks can guess about fur, skulls and other interesting artifacts. There is also a lovely trail that leads to a turtle filled pond, and many labelled trees.
The centre also hosts at least two events a year where the public can watch an eagle be released, truly inspiring. I am most impressed by just how much wildlife circles the area, as if to say "thank you for returning us to our natural place." A must see on anyones Up Island Journey.
